A Google Business Profile checklist for funeral homes

By the CremationMatch editorial team. Published October 3, 2026. How we research

The short answer. The map results that appear when a family searches “cremation near me” come from Google Business Profiles, and only the funeral home itself can hold one. An hour spent on categories, services with prices, photos and reviews does more for local visibility than any paid listing, including ours.

The checklist

Basics

  • Profile claimed and verified for each physical location
  • Business name exactly as it appears on your sign, with no added keywords
  • Primary category “Funeral home”. Add “Cremation service” if you offer it, and “Crematorium” only if you operate one
  • Address, phone and website identical to what is on your own site
  • Hours accurate. If you answer at all hours, set the profile to open 24 hours

Services and price

  • “Direct cremation” added as a service, with your complete price
  • A one-line description of what the price includes
  • Other services you want calls for: memorial services, planning ahead, veterans’ services
  • A link to your price list page

Photos

  • Exterior from the street, so a family can recognise the building
  • Entrance, arrangement room and chapel
  • The people who will answer the phone
  • Nothing more than a couple of years old

Reviews

  • A gentle, consistent way of asking: a card with the paperwork, or a note a few weeks afterward
  • A reply to every review, thanking the family by name only if they used it themselves
  • No incentives and no reviews written by staff. Both breach Google’s rules and families can tell

Each month

  • Check for edits suggested by the public and reject wrong ones
  • Answer new questions in the Q&A section
  • Confirm holiday hours

Why this matters more than any directory

A directory, however good, appears in the ordinary results below the map. The map itself is reserved for businesses with a verified local profile. If your profile is thin, a competitor’s complete one will sit above you regardless of what else you buy.

The two work together. Your profile wins the map. A page with your published price, on your own site and on a directory listing, answers the family who is comparing.

Questions owners ask

Which Google category should a funeral home use?

“Funeral home” as the primary category for most firms. Add “Cremation service” as a secondary category if you offer cremation. Choose categories that describe what you are, not every term you would like to rank for.

Can I show my cremation price on my Google profile?

Yes. Add it as a service with a price. Keep it identical to your website and price list.

How do I get more reviews without being insensitive?

Wait a few weeks, ask once, and make it easy with a direct link. Most families who were well cared for are glad to help the next family find you.

General guidance. Google changes its profile features from time to time, so check its current help pages.
