Five ways a funeral home can be found online, compared

By the CremationMatch editorial team. Published October 3, 2026. How we research

The short answer. Start with what is free: your Google Business Profile and a website that shows your price. Add paid channels only when you know what a new family is worth to you, and prefer the ones where your cost does not rise each time a competitor raises a bid.

We sell one of the five options below, so read this with that in mind. We have tried to describe each one the way we would want it described to us.

Do the free things first

No paid channel makes up for a profile with no reviews or a website that hides the price. Before spending anything:

  • Complete your Google Business Profile. Our checklist takes about an hour.
  • Put your direct cremation price and what it includes on your own website.
  • Ask every family you serve for a review, and reply to each one.

Know your number before you buy anything

Every channel should be judged the same way: what does it cost to gain one family, and what is that family worth?

  1. Take what you keep from one direct cremation after direct costs.
  2. Divide the yearly cost of the channel by that figure. That is your break-even number of families.
  3. Ask every caller how they found you, and write it down. Without this you are guessing.

Our break-even calculator does the arithmetic for a flat-fee listing. The same method works for ads: your monthly spend divided by what you keep per family.

Where each channel tends to disappoint

  • Search ads work, but they are an auction. A national advertiser entering your market raises your cost overnight, and the spend stops producing the day you stop paying.
  • Pay-per-lead looks risk-free because you pay only for leads. The risk moves into lead quality and into speed: a shared lead usually goes to whoever calls back first.
  • Open directories put you on a page with every other firm in town, which is the comparison you were hoping to avoid.
  • Exclusive directories, ours included, are only as useful as the traffic they earn. A new one cannot show you a track record. Ask to see your page before paying, keep the term short, and measure.

Questions owners ask

What is the most cost-effective advertising for a funeral home?

For almost every firm, a complete Google Business Profile and a steady flow of genuine reviews. They cost nothing and decide who appears in the map results when a family searches nearby.

Are pay-per-lead services worth it?

They can be if leads are exclusive to you and you answer within minutes. Ask whether a lead is sold to more than one firm, how a “lead” is defined, and whether you can dispute bad ones.

How should I measure any of this?

Ask every caller how they found you and record the answer. A dedicated phone number for each channel does the same job automatically.
